Moat Mountain Winter Traverse

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun January 26, 2020

Come practice your winter hiking and above treeline skills on this winter traverse of the Moat Mountains! Our intended 9.6 mile route across Moat Mountain Trail is rated 'difficult' and has 3,250 feet of vertical gain. It will take us most of the day. It has significant portions above treeline and some steep ledge sections, and will be a great chance to work on skills including crampon and snowshoe use, navigation, and safely handling weather. Since our focus is on practicing such skills, we will go even in marginal conditions, breaking trail as needed, although if we encounter difficulties or are behind schedule, we will retrace to our starting trailhead rather than completing the traverse. Participants must have prior winter hiking experience. Winter Hiking Program participants who have done other trips with above treeline exposure are welcome on this hike.
