Family Halloween AMC Carter Notch Hut Overnight, White Mountains, NH

Family Date: Sat October 26, 2019 - Sun October 27, 2019

The AMC's Carter Notch Hut, known to be haunted, is the perfect destination for this family Halloween Saturday night overnight (more on that later). We backpack in 3.8 miles with 2,050' elevation gain along the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail arriving at the hut with a small lake and surrounded by the towering cliffs of Wildcat and Carter Dome on either side.

Carter Notch Hut, built in 1914, has a main lodge with two detached bunkhouses. Carter Notch is known to be haunted with "Red Mac" McGregor, the friendly ghost of Red Mac McGregor who used to be caretaker at Carter. Here a link to the story (more on the web too): http://www.wmur.com/article/thought-to-be-haunted-carter-notch-hut-turns- 100-this-year/5193505)

This is a great way to celebrate Halloween and introduce your kids to backpacking without the added work of bringing a tent. We hike into the Hut at an easy pace, stopping to explore and take pictures of the landscape. There are lots of boulders to climb too! After settling in those who wish to hike more can do part of the Carter Dome trail, or hike up some of the switchbacks going up to Wildcat. Otherwise, you and your family can relax with a book, play games, or go swimming in the lake (brrrr) weather permitting. We will prepare a group dinner together, then more games and storytelling at night. Sunday, after a pancake breakfast, we hike back to our cars.

You and your children must be able to hike 3.8 miles along rocky terrain with a moderate elevation gain of 2,050 ft (some steeper sections) carrying your personal gear, sleeping bags, and some group food. Cost $75/member ($85 non-members) includes lodging at Carter Notch Hut Saturday night, one dinner and one breakfast. Participants are responsible for their own snacks and lunches. 20s/30s: Volunteer for farm chores at Drumlin Farm, 10/27

Young Members Date: Sun October 27, 2019

Join AMC Boston's Young Members to volunteer at Mass Audubon's Drumlin Farm and Wildlife Sanctuary! This will be the last of our crops volunteer trips of the year - don't miss out! In September, we harvested six truckloads of pumpkins, squash, and gourds. In October, we harvested a few hundred pounds of tomatoes, beets, and potatoes. What will we help with next?! Sign up to find out!

A few folks will also have the chance to help take down the Tales of the Night event decorations from the night before - think spiderwebs, graveyard, and other assorted spooky things.

Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty. Please wear closed-toed shoes, not sandals. We recommend light-weight long pants, not shorts, as you will be working at ground level. If you have work gloves, bring them; otherwise, Drumlin has loaner gloves you can use. Bring a water bottle - a must-have! Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses) is highly recommended.

Andover Four Reservations Hike

Forty Plus Date: Wed October 30, 2019

Join the Wednesday Wramblers for an easy 6.5 mile hike as we explore four of the reservations owned and managed by the Andover Village Improvement Society (AVIS). AVIS is the second oldest land preservation society in the country and owns over 1,100 acres of land throughout the town. We will explore Vale, Indian Ridge, Baker's Meadow and the Shawsheen River reservations. Our total elevation gain is only 302 feet. Although the trail is never far from civilization, we will experience views of the Shawsheen River, open meadows, boardwalks through marshes and the open water of the pond at Baker's Meadow. Part of this route is incorporated in the Bay Circuit trail and one of the trails runs along a glacial esker. We expect that the hike will take about 3.5 hours.

Please be prepared with water, lunch, snacks and layers appropriate for the weather. There is always the chance that the trails will be muddy if it rains so dress accordingly. You will probably not need hiking poles on this trail because there is very little elevation. We will meet at 10:00 AM for a prompt start at 10:15.

Registration is required and detailed directions will be sent once you have registered.
