Young Members Couch to 4K Hiking Program

Young Members Date: Thu June 27, 2019 - Sat August 31, 2019

Couch to 4k is a series of hikes intended to introduce participants to the basic skills and knowledge required for safe and fun outdoor experiences. This program aims to be inclusive of all hikers, but is geared toward beginners and marketed as such. Hikes are organized into four levels of difficulty, starting with local walks with little elevation gain and culminating in treks up four-thousand-footers of New Hampshire.

Couch to 4k trip leaders will highlight important skills for safe hiking such navigation, hydration, nutrition, and proper attire. No dog is allow for the hikes.

Level 1 hikes include little elevation gain, are under 5 miles, move at a moderate pace. These hikes are great opportunities to get to know your leaders and fellow participants to review some basic skills for hiking, with an emphasis on gear needed for more difficult hikes.

Level 2 hikes are typically 3-5 miles and include elevation gain, but less than 2000 ft. At this level and above all participants are expected to have appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and other essential gear.

Level 3 hikes are challenging hikes usually in NH and between 5-9 miles with significant elevation gain (2000 - 3000 ft). These hikes include some of the shorter 4ks. Some hikes may include rock scrambling, ledges, and stream crossings.

Level 4 hikes are the more difficult 4Ks in the Whites. Mount Adams is a 5,774 foot mountain in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, making it the second highest mountain in New England after Mount Washington. This hike will require additional screening.

The intended audience of the Couch to 4K program is young members (YM - hikers in their 20s and 30s), but all are welcome.

If you don't have a car and are worried about how you'll be able to reach the mountains, we have some options for you! Once you're approved for a trip you'll have access to the roster, where you'll be able to find contact information for other people who are driving from your area.

Pemigewasset Wilderness and Owl's Head Backpack

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Fri August 23, 2019 - Sun August 25, 2019

Join us for a 3-day, 2 night, into-the-wilderness backpacking experience, with one of the most remote 4,000 footers as a cherry on top! We will travel deep into the Pemigewasset Wilderness to Thirteen Falls Tent Site, where we will set up camp for 2 nights and hike to Owl's Head with just day packs on day 2. The days will be 8 miles (1200 ft elevation gain), 9 miles (3000 ft elevation gain), and 8 miles (no elevation gain), respectively. On our hike in and out, there will be numerous stream crossings that may require getting wet - potentially to the knees or thighs. The pace over the course of the weekend will be moderate - newer backpackers are welcome, but due to the length and distance of the trip, prior experience backpacking is needed, as well as at least day hikes of a similar length and intensity in the weeks preceding the trip.
