Canceled: Presidential Traverse

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 15, 2020

One of the epic and most famous hikes in the White Mountains is the Presidential Traverse. Join us for this strenuous and amazing hike in which hikers climb all of the significant mountains in the Presidential Range, including eight 4000-footers, with 14 miles of above treeline hiking. This hike offers stellar, uninterrupted views for hours on end when the weather cooperates and the clouds are lifted.

This is a moderately paced, one-day trip that is about 24 miles long with close to 9,000 feet of elevation gain. This trip involves challenging terrain, including steep and rocky ascents, uneven footing and exposed areas above treeline. Each participant must be in excellent hiking shape, have recent high elevation and high mileage hikes, and be comfortable hiking in the dark with a headlamp. If we are able to maintain a steady 1.5 mph pace, including breaks, our hike will take 16 hours, so we will be starting and ending in darkness.

Regardless of the season, a Presidential Traverse is not a hike to take on lightly. Besides being physically strenuous, bad weather (i.e. rain, high winds, fog and cold temperatures) is a constant threat and can change quickly. Much of this hike is above treeline, so please be prepared with gear appropriate for all weather conditions, in addition to the appropriate gear for summer hiking in the Whites.

Our group size will be limited to five participants, out of our concern about social distancing. We will be following all AMC, WHO and CDC COVID-19 guidelines. Required equipment will include at least one mask and pair of medical-grade gloves.

Get Smarts : Smarts Mountain - 52 WAV

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 15, 2020

Smarts Mountain, at 3,240 feet, lies along the Appalachian Trail, not far from where it enters New Hampshire from the West. Open quartzite ledges on Lambert Ridge and an old fire tower rising above its wooded summit offer fine views across the surrounding countryside. Smarts has a well-deserved place on the New Hampshire 52 With a View hiking list.

Our hike will take us approximately 7.5 miles, with over 2500 feet of elevation gain. We'll maintain a moderate pace, but the elevation gain and rugged trail puts this into the "Vigorous" category. There are a few sections of the trail requiring minor scrambling, so you will need good footwear.

This will be limited to a small number of participants, due both to a limited amount of trailhead parking, as well as our desire to make this trip as comfortable as possible for all participants.
