AMC Boston Family Outings - NH Camping/Hiking Weekend w/Parents and Teens/Young Adults

Family Date: Fri July 24, 2020 - Sun July 26, 2020

WELCOME!

Appalachian Mountain Club ("AMC") is pleased to be able to reopen some of its operations in accordance with state regulations. In connection with re-opening, AMC is requiring all volunteers and participants to read the following warning and sign the liability waiver in order to be present at AMC activities.

With that in mind, we would like you to join us Friday July 24th thru July 26th in the White Mountain National Forest in NH. Back to basics; Camping and Hiking

Come join us with one or both parents on a fun camping/hiking weekend in the NH White Mountain National Forest. Our "Fun and Safe Adventure" will be conducted under the current AMC Phase II guidelines and the "up to date" stay at home advisories in MA and NH. Keeping "Socially Distanced" we will setup a tent base camp, bring your own stove and cooking gear, make your meals, hike two days and enjoy one of New Hampshire's scenic peaks or maybe a waterfall.

Please read the AMC guidelines. We are limited to a maximum of 10 people (including leaders), but will most likely be a group of 7 or 8 to help facilitate "Social Distancing" both camping and hiking.

Our basecamp will be three multi-tent sites located in the Sugarloaf II Campground

The campground is located off Rt. 302 and Zealand Road just outside of Twin Mountain. (See below for more specific directions)

Leaders are planning a challenging (but very doable) Saturday hike up to Mt Crawford (approximately 5.3 miles and 2100 ft. elevation gain). One of the best views of the Presidential Range and lunch on Mt. Crawford, make up the highlights of the hike. Hikes could change due to trail crowding, weather, group dynamics, or circumstances outside leader control.

Sunday, after breakfast and breaking down camp we will hike from the campground to Middle and North Sugarloaf Mtns. (approximately 3.5 miles, 1100 ft. elev. gain).

Weekend Cost: $25 per person (not including personal expenses; i.e. food, gas, tolls, $5 extra car per camp site )

Hike Leader: Michael Wainer, (617) 549-2731, Stoneham, MA, wainer18@hotmail.com
Co-Leader: Dave Beck (781) 321-8321, davidbeckrph@comcast.net

Per AMC Phase II guidelines; all participants and leaders MUST bring and their own face coverings (masks), hand sanitizer (with 60% or greater alcohol content), water, food and snacks for all three days. All participants MUST register online via Activities Database (ActDb).

** Trip can be cancelled at anytime if AMC, MA or NH guidelines change ***

Canceled: AMC Interchapter Novice Family Hiking & Camping Workshop (Pet-Friendly), Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, Carmel NY - CANCELED

Family Date: Fri July 31, 2020 - Sun August 2, 2020

Family fun hiking and camping weekend July 31st 2020 (after 3 PM) to August 2nd (until 11 AM) at Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park in Carmel NY. Have fun, Improve your hiking and camping skills, and look forward to the option to backpack in the future. This program is at a walk-in (3 - 4 minutes) rustic group campsite next to the Appalachian Trail (AT). Rustic means tent camping, cooking outdoors and there are only portable toilets for bathroom facilities.

Volunteer leaders from across the AMC will assist teaching safe group hiking and camping skills along with Leave-No-Trace best practices.

This program is free and open to the public. Participants provide their own transportation, camping and hiking gear appropriate for the weather, food and snacks. AMC provides the group campsite and volunteer leadership.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and there are specific rules for pets that join to keep them and everyone else safe.

Last years program included group activities on hikes and demonstrations how to use various water filters and hang food to keep it safe from animals, how to pack a pack and what to pack for various seasons. There will be lots of gear to show how we go about having fun in the outdoors year round.

There will be free time Saturday afternoon that families can relax on their own or drive to the state park beach area where for a fee they can park and use those facilities.

This location is convenient to major highways and mass transit. There are ride share options to get to the campground. We encourage carpooling and will assist with transportation.

The photo above is from our previous location in Harriman State Park. The new location does not have any buildings where we will be camping.

For more information, contact any of the leaders.

Presidential Traverse

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 15, 2020

One of the epic and most famous hikes in the White Mountains is the Presidential Traverse. Join us for this strenuous and amazing hike in which hikers climb all of the significant mountains in the Presidential Range, including eight 4000-footers, with 14 miles of above treeline hiking. This hike offers stellar, uninterrupted views for hours on end when the weather cooperates and the clouds are lifted.

This is a moderately paced, one-day trip that is about 24 miles long with close to 9,000 feet of elevation gain. This trip involves challenging terrain, including steep and rocky ascents, uneven footing and exposed areas above treeline. Each participant must be in excellent hiking shape, have recent high elevation and high mileage hikes, and be comfortable hiking in the dark with a headlamp. If we are able to maintain a steady 1.5 mph pace, including breaks, our hike will take 16 hours, so we will be starting and ending in darkness.

Regardless of the season, a Presidential Traverse is not a hike to take on lightly. Besides being physically strenuous, bad weather (i.e. rain, high winds, fog and cold temperatures) is a constant threat and can change quickly. Much of this hike is above treeline, so please be prepared with gear appropriate for all weather conditions, in addition to the appropriate gear for summer hiking in the Whites.

Our group size will be limited to five participants, out of our concern about social distancing. We will be following all AMC, WHO and CDC COVID-19 guidelines. Required equipment will include at least one mask and pair of medical-grade gloves.
