Early Fall hike to Whiteface and Passaconaway

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun September 27, 2020

Join us for an early fall hike up Mts Whiteface (4,020') and Passaconaway (4,043') - two peaks on the NH Four Thousand Footer list. This strenuous, approximate 12-mile loop hike will involve some significant scrambling up the open ledges on the Blueberry Ledge trail from where, weather permitting, we will be treated to stunning views of NH's Lakes Region. Expect a 9-hour, moderately-paced hike and an elevation gain of around 3,850 ft. Participants are expected to have recent previous experience of summiting NH 4,000 footers or equivalent mountains.

Mount Shaw's Fall Colors

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat October 3, 2020

Mount Shaw is a gem on the 52 WAV list as the highest peak in the Ossipee Range at 2,990 ft with incredible views of Lake Winnipesaukee to the south and the Sandwich Range to the north! This region is scheduled to be in or near peak foliage so be ready to take some great photos during our 7.7-mile loop in the woods maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. We will summit Mt. Shaw directly and descend over Black Snout and Tate Mountain, gaining 2,450' of elevation. The Shaw summit is shared by snowmobiles in the winter and therefore widely accessible. We plan on maintaining a moderate pace. With stops for views and lunch, you should plan on 6+ hours.

Hike Wildcats

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat October 10, 2020

Join us for a hike of Wildcat Ridge and summit its 5 peaks named A, B, C, D and E. Only peaks A and D are included in the NH 4000 Footer list as summits B, C and E lack the 200-foot minimum topographic prominence. Our plan, however, is to summit all 5 peaks and, weather permitting, experience fantastic views of the northern Presidentials from the ridge as well as views of Carter Dome Mountain, Carter Notch Hut and the Carter Lakes from Wildcat A. This hike is approximate 9 miles with 3,200' of elevation gain.

BEONLINEWITHAMC: Beyond the 48 - the winter edition

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Wed October 14, 2020

Contrary to what some people think, the hiking season doesn't end when there's snow on the ground. In fact, many people think it's actually just beginning. While climbing the 48 peaks in New Hampshire above 4,000 feet has become a popular winter pursuit, there are other high peak challenges both in New Hampshire and throughout the Northeast that someone can use for motivation. These include the Adirondack 46, the New England 67, the Northeast 115, and even the Trailwrights 72. While the number of people who have completed most of these lists in non-winter are in the thousands, the numbers drop to the hundreds for those who have completed them in winter. Reaching some of the summits was relatively straightforward and easy while others required detailed planning, mental endurance, and physical strength. Join Michael Blair as he shares stories, pictures, and tips of his journey to explore these other peaks.

You must register for this event. We will e-mail you the Zoom meeting details on the day of the event around noon. The presentation will start at 7:00 pm.

Michael first became involved with the Appalachian Mountain Club's Boston Chapter as a trip leader in 2010. Since then he has been an instructor at both the Spring and Winter Introduction to Hiking and Backpacking Programs as well as the Spring and Fall Leadership Programs. In 2012 he became a field instructor with the AMC's flagship Mountain Leadership School. In 2019 he became a field instructor at the Adirondack Mountain Club's flagship Winter Mountaineering School. He and his wife Monica are outdoors most weekends, and together they run their own hiking group. Michael hikes year-round throughout the northeast and has finished the White Mountain 4,000-Footer Grid (each peak during each month). He has also hiked all of the Northeast 115 and the New England Hundred Highest at least once in both summer and winter. Besides the northeast, Michael has also hiked in Arizona, Bolivia, Colorado, and Italy - the highest elevation he has reached is 17,785 feet. When he's not hiking or backpacking, Michael is a volunteer trail maintainer (Caps Ridge Trail) and participates in various kayak and surfski races across New England.
