WHP Participants ONLY: Mt. Tecumseh Winter Day Hike (Level 1)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun December 15, 2019

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to registered participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp19@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below.
The objective of this hike will be to give WHP participants experience in hiking a White Mountain four thousand footer in winter conditions. Attention will focus on gear layering, appropriate food and fluid intake and, hopefully, the use of foot traction, including microspikes and snowshoes. This hike is open to all participants of the Winter Hiking Program. It is an excellent opportunity to use new skills, test gear and physical ability while getting to know other hikers in a pleasant and educational setting. Experienced leaders will assist with winter techniques and questions about hiking, and the Appalachian Mountain Club itself. Round trip of approximately 5 miles with an elevation gain of 2,300 ft.

December Hike to Mt. Tecumseh

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun December 15, 2019

Join us for a mid-December hike to Mt. Tecumseh (4,003 feet). Mount Tecumseh is in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains. It is the shortest mountain on the AMC's official 4,000 footers list. Mt. Tecumseh is named after the leader of the Shawnee Native American tribe. Views to the immediate north include Mt. Osceola, the highest peak in the region. East, across the valley, is the Tripyramid Massif, which includes North Tripyramid and Middle Tripyramid. We will hike from the Waterville Valley Ski Area and will have 2 water crossings. We will climb 2,300 feet of elevation gain over approximately 5 miles, over steep, challenging, rocky terrain. Full Winter gear, including microspikes and snowshoes, is required. Poles are recommended.

Feel the wind on Straightback Mountain and Mt Major

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun December 15, 2019

On this hike up Straightback Mountain and Mt Major, we will focus on spending time in exposed sections of the hike appropriately handling the weather, rather than worrying about summiting. Our intended route will go up and around both peaks, has about 1,585 ft of vertical gain over 6.1 miles, and should take us 4-5 hours. This is a great chance to work on above treeline (ATL) hiking skills and help decide if bigger ATL trips are for you or not. As such, we will go even in marginal conditions, breaking trail as needed. Participants must have some prior winter hiking experience. Strong Winter Hiking Program participants who have already completed a Level 1 hike are welcome on this hike.

WHP Participants ONLY: Kearsarge North Day Hike (Level 1)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat December 21, 2019

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to registered participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp19@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below.
This is a level 1 day-hike suitable for someone who has taken the Boston HB 2019 Winter Hiking Program but who has not done any winter hikes yet, or for someone who has taken the program and done one or more previous winter hikes. The round trip is 6.2 miles and the trail gains 2600ft of elevation, so it is moderate in difficulty and participants should be in at least decent physical shape. It should take us about 6 hours to complete the hike, and emphasis will be on instruction in winter hiking techniques including temperature regulation and self-care.

Mt Jefferson in winter

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sun December 22, 2019

Let's celebrate the first full day of calendar winter at Mt. Jefferson. This is an out-and-back hike of Mt. Jefferson. We expect to hike approximately 11 miles with 4,000-4,200' of elevation gain. Given that Dec 21/22 will have the shortest of daylight all year, we need to get an early start to maximize our time. All participants must be experienced above treeline in winter, also have experience using crampons and ice axes. Bad weather date for the hike will be Saturday, Dec 28.

Eisenhower on Second Day of Winter

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Mon December 23, 2019

Join us for a winter day hike to Mount Eisenhower. Yes, it's a Monday, but maybe you'll have the day off because it's Christmas week. Following the Crawford Path nearly to the summit, we'll hike about 10 miles out and back with 3200 feet of elevation gain. Weather permitting, we'll enjoy beautiful views along the way. This trail has a long, exposed stretch above treeline, and we can anticipate full winter conditions, so previous winter mountaineering experience and full above-treeline winter gear is required. Expect an early start and steady pace with brief breaks.

Introduction to Winter Backpacking (for AMC leaders/co-leaders only)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat January 4, 2020 - Sun January 5, 2020

This trip is for AMC Boston Hiking and Backpacking leaders and co-leaders who would like to try winter backpacking for the first time or hone their winter camping skills in a safe and fun environment. The trip will take place in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, likely close to the Kancamagus Highway, with the precise location to be determined. We'll do a modest hike (3-4 miles) with full packs (perhaps to a small peak or pretty destination) and then camp at a sheltered spot that is within a mile or so of a road, allowing early exit if needed. Prior winter day-hiking experience is required. Winter day-hiking gear is also required, but the trip is designed to allow us to be flexible in terms of winter backpacking gear. We will give priority to leaders/co-leaders who want to gain more experience with winter camping, but experienced winter backpackers who would like to join the fun will be welcome if there is room.

Hike the Mighty Moosilauke

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat January 4, 2020

On this hike up Mt. Moosilauke (4,802'), we will focus on spending time hiking on exposed sections of the trail and will learn how to handle different aspects of the winter weather. This will be a loop hike and will include South Peak plus an added road walk (3 miles out and back) as the access road to the trailhead is closed in winter. Total trip is about 10.9 miles with approx 3,000 ft of elevation gain and should take us around 7-8 hours. This is a great chance to work on above treeline (ATL) hiking skills and help decide if bigger ATL trips are for you or not. As such, we will go even in marginal conditions, breaking trail as needed. WHP Participants ONLY: Welch/Dickey Winter Day Hike (Level 2)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat January 11, 2020

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to registered participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at whp19@hb.amcboston.org or follow the link below.
This winter day hike is open to all participants in the Winter Hiking and Backpacking Program (WHP), and is especially aimed at beginners of winter hiking . On this 4.4-mile loop hike, you will experience fairly rugged terrain; icy ledges; two summits (Welch and Dickey); a captivating introduction to open, above-tree line travel with 1700 feet of elevation gain; and great views of Mt. Tripyramid and Sandwich Mountain across the valley. This is one of the finest, most popular half-day hikes in the White Mountains, made better still with winter's respite from the crowds. NOTE: You MUST have full crampons for this hike! You can bring microspikes if you wish, but they are NOT a substitute for the required crampons. Snowshoes, and winter (NOT 3-season) boots are also required. However, depending on conditions, snowshoes may (or may not) get left in the cars. While this is a level 2 outing, do not be fooled. In winter, this is a serious hike. Those open ledges are guaranteed to be covered with ice, requiring crampons. And though the high point is only 2700 feet, far shorter than the 4000-footers, a cold wind can cause frostbite at any elevation. Full winter gear is therefore required no matter what the forecast.
