Ride from Weston Center
Ride from Weston Center
Bicycling Date: Fri June 29, 2012Update: As of 9 AM, it looks as though another sprinkle is coming. I plan to ride. I just made copies of the cue sheet, and I will leave for Weston in a few minutes.
Meet 10AM in front of Weston Town Hall, to start ride by 10:15. 13-15 mph, 24 miles. Rolling terrain, a few hills. Steady rain, or temp below 40, cancels. Helmet required. Expect to finish by 12:30. The ride will go through Wellesley, Natick, Wayland, and Sudbury. There are several scenic roads (ponds, rivers, hills with cows) including stretches through or along the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. There are also short stretches on busier roads (Rt. 30 in Weston, Rt. 126 in Wayland, Rt. 20 in Sudbury, Rt. 27 in Wayland). We will regroup frequently. If there are mechanical problems, we will all wait until they are fixed.

Weston Town Hall
This is where we meet to start the ride. Water fountains and rest rooms are inside Weston Town Hall.
Weston Reservoir
The Weston Reservoir is just a mile or two from the start of the ride, before the first hill, on Ash Street. This spot is very popular with dog walkers.
Hamlen Reservation, Wayland
The Hamlen Reservation is off Rice Road in Wayland. You only get glimpses of the pond from the road. The first time I ever got off my bike and wandered into the reservation was to get this photo.
Cows on a hill
The day I took these photos, the cows on Rice Road were not cooperating. Instead of spreading out prettily over the hillside, they were all in a bunch. Around the corner, off Old Connecticut Path, I found these bovines.
Swans
As I started riding down Rice Road in Wayland, I noticed these swans. The marsh is on the edge of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Look closely: there is a young swan along with the adults.
Marsh
This is a wider view of the marsh on the edge of the GMNWR. Along the edge, you can see one of the swans.
Sudbury River
Sudbury River, as seen from Pelham River Road in Wayland. Part of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.
Heard Pond
Heard Pond, from Pelham Island Road in Wayland. The other side of the road is forested, part of the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.
Campion Center
The Jesuits live a little closer to heaven than the rest of us. In other words, the ride is all down hill from here.
